Great Crested Grebe

Great Crested Grebe
(Podiceps cristatus)

The Great Crested Grebe is a very elegant water bird with extremely ornate head plumes. They have an elaborate courtship display where they make synchronised dives and rise out of the water together lifting weed and shake their heads with their head plumes extended. They were almost hunted to extinction in the UK for their feathers.
